Your Tax Dollars at Play

The good folks at Citizens Against Government Waste have published their 2002 Pig Book, which chronicles annual government porkbarelling and the general frittering away of billions of dollars of taxpayer money on local projects. Among this year's "Oinker" award winners: Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) for his blizzard of $451 million (or $711 per capita) in pork for Fiscal Year 2002; Sen. Conrad Burns (R-Mont.) for $400,000 for the Montana Sheep Institute; Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) for the $2 million grant to refurbish the Vulcan Statue in Birmingham, Alabama (what is with all these hypocritical Republican politicians? I thought that they were supposed to be the party of smaller government.); $475,000 for numerous orchestras; Sen. Ernest "Fritz" Hollings (D-S.C.) for $14 million for the Hollings Marine Laboratory and $1 million for the Hollings Cancer Center. For another galling series of narcissistic raids on the public purse, see Anne Coulter's jaw-dropping piece from a few months back on the light-fingered Sen. Robert Byrd (D-W. Va).
